Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) — Italy (~2 hour drive to Piran)
Best for international flights and direct routes. Ideal for guests who want to spend a couple of days exploring the canals, history, and sights of Venice before taking a scenic drive down to the coast. Rental cars are located right at the terminal.

Trieste Airport (TRS) — Italy (~1 hour drive to Piran)
A quick, stress-free regional hub with the shortest drive to Piran.

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) — Slovenia (~1.5 hour drive to Piran)
Ideal if you plan to spend time exploring Slovenia's capital or Lake Bled before heading to the coast.

All three airports offer easy rental car pickups and direct door-to-door shuttle connections right into Piran.

Getting Around Important Entry and Driving Requirements

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System): The European Union is introducing an automated digital travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors, including U.S. passport holders, entering the Schengen Area. The application is submitted entirely online, costs around $22 (€20), and is valid for three years once approved. We will continue to monitor this requirement and update our website with specific instructions and direct application links as details become available. We recommend checking back here or visiting the official EU travel site closer to departure.

Renting a Car

If your travel schedule allows, we highly recommend renting a car for at least part of your trip! Slovenia is a gorgeous country, and having a car gives you the freedom to explore coastal towns, nearby wineries, and countryside landmarks at your own pace. Driving here is safe, modern, and very straightforward.

International Driving Permit (IDP): If you plan to rent a car to explore the region, Slovenia legally requires foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their valid home driver's license. You can obtain an IDP prior to departure for $20 either through AAA or the official American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA), the only two organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue them. I have included the links for both application sites below on this page (no AAA membership required). Rental agencies may not always ask for it at pickup, but local traffic authorities can fine drivers who do not have one on hand while operating a vehicle.

Piran to Portorož Coastal Walk: A paved, flat coastal path connects old-town Piran to the vibrant waterfront of Portorož. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes on foot, winding right along the water's edge past swim spots, seaside cafes, and coastal parks.

Strunjan Nature Park & Moon Bay (Mesečev Zaliv): Located just a 10-minute drive or scenic coastal hike from Piran, this nature reserve features dramatic 80-meter flysch cliffs rising above a crescent-shaped pebble bay. A short walking trail leads past pine forests and the iconic Strunjan Cross, offering sweeping views over the Gulf of Trieste and access to one of the coast's most pristine, undeveloped swim spots. Sečovlje Salina Nature Park: Located just on the edge of Portorož, these historic salt pans have been harvesting sea salt by hand using 700-year-old methods. You can walk or bike through the scenic nature reserve and coastal salt fields.
