TRAVEL REMINDERS & RECOMMENDATIONS
CHECK YOUR PASSPORT!
Friendly reminder to please check your passport expiration date! Your passport must be valid for six months prior to the departure date, so if you need to renew, please schedule that appointment accordingly. It can take up to four months for the renewal process.
The new EU ETIAS visa requirement, initially set to go into effect in 2025, has been delayed and will take effect in 2026. Refer to the link below for more information on these changes and any recent updates.
GETTING TO SANTORINI
We recommend flying into Athens, Greece and then taking a domestic flight or the ferry from the main ports of Athens (Piraeus and Rafina). There are limited direct flights to Santorini, which are only available from certain cities and typically tend to cost more than flying into Athens. A domestic flight from Athens to Santorini is approximately 45 minutes on average.
Tips on taking a ferry from Athens to Santorini:
Depending on your travel plans and itinerary, we recommend taking a ferry from one of the two major ports in Athens (Rafina or Piraeus). Ferry rides from Athens to Santorini are available daily and are typically around 5-6 hours. You can purchase your tickets on the Ferry Hopper website linked below (tickets typically range between €60 to €80 per passenger). We have also linked below a website with helpful tips and visuals for navigating each port.
Rafina: The port of Rafina is the closest port to the International Airport of Athens and is the best option if you plan to take the ferry to Santorini directly after your flight.
Piraeus: The port of Piraeus is the most convenient port if you plan to stay in Athens before your trip to Santorini. It’s closer to the city center and is easily accessible by metro, bus or taxi.

EXPLORE SANTORINI
Things to do in Santorini
Ancient Akrotiri
Also referred to as the "Greek Pompeii." The town was covered in ash following a volcanic eruption on the island in the 16th century BC and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Aegean and Greece. The Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism website below offers combined admission to Ancient Akrotiri, Ancient Thera and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Use the link below to purchase your tickets online.
Red Beach
Located in the south part of the island near the Akrotiri archaeological site, Red Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Santorini and is known for its beautiful volcanic scenery. The formation of Red Beach was caused by the volcanic eruptions, and it is one of the very few red-sand beaches in the world.
Snorkeling is a popular activity to do while visiting Red Beach due to the colorful marine life and intriguing rock formations. For a less crowded experience, it is recommended to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Definitely worth visiting even if you don’t want to do a beach day here!
Akrotiri Lighthouse
Stop at the famous Akrotiri Lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic views of the azure Aegean Sea from the cliffs. If you plan to visit the Akrotiri archaeological site or Red Beach, the Akrotiri Lighthouse is a great nearby popular attraction site to consider stopping at.
Sail the Caldera
Take a boat tour to get the best views of the caldera.
Ammoudi Bay
Located in Thera (about a 15-to 20-minute walk from Oia), on the northwestern tip of Santorini, Amoudi Bay is known for its breathtaking sunsets and is famously featured in the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Getting to Amoudi Bay requires you to take a lot of stairs so make sure you bring comfortable shoes! Most travel sites strongly suggest visiting Amoudi Bay in the late afternoon to get the best views of the sunset.
Hike from Oia to Fira
This 6.5-mile one-way hike takes you through four charming towns—Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. Be sure to set aside at least half a day for this adventure so that you have time to stop at the many popular sights and beautiful ocean views along the way.
Visit the Hot Springs
Located in Palea Kameni, the hot springs of Santorini were formed as a result of the volcanic activity that created the island. Santorini usually experiences average water temperatures between 70°F to 75°F in October, so your swim in the hot springs should be comfortable during your time there.
Visit Local Wineries
We did the research for you and picked out some of Santorini's most popular winery options! Click on the links below to view our recommendations. Cheers!
