You can hire a taxi directly from the airport. Typical fare from Denpasar to Uluwatu ranges between 400k-500k IDR/ $25-$30 USD (depending on luggage load). We also have local drivers we can recommend if you want to plan ahead of arrival.
Grab
Grab is an app similar to Uber used widely across Bali. We recommend downloading the app and comparing rates to local drivers.
f & q
1. How long is the flight from California to Bali?
The journey takes about 24 hours from Los Angeles (LAX) to Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport - DPS), including layovers. Most flights have at least one stop in cities like Tokyo, Singapore, or Taipei. If you are looking to take a day or two between flights, we recommend spending a night in Singapore and exploring the city.
2. What is the best airline to fly with?
Popular airlines for this route include Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and EVA Airlines, known for comfort and reliable service. We recommend booking around January/ February for the best rates.
3. Indonesian Drug Laws
Indonesia has strict drug laws, with severe penalties for drug possession, trafficking, and use. It is one of the toughest countries globally for drug-related offenses. Possession of small amounts (marijuana included) can lead to prison sentences ranging from several years to life imprisonment. Larger quantities can result in the death penalty. We strongly advise against bringing vape pens or any items related to drugs.
3. Do I need a visa to enter Bali?
If you're staying in Bali for less than 30 days, you won’t need a visa for tourism purposes. For longer stays, you may need to apply for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at the airport.
4. The wedding venue is in Uluwatu, but are there other areas in Bali we should explore?
Yes! While the wedding will take place in beautiful Uluwatu, we highly encourage you to explore other popular areas of Bali if your schedule allows. Ubud is known for its lush jungles, temples, and art scene, while Canggu and Seminyak offer trendy beach clubs, dining, and shopping. Consider visiting these spots before or after the wedding for a well-rounded Bali experience!
5. Will I experience jet lag?
Yes, there is a significant time difference (Bali is 15-16 hours ahead of California). It’s a good idea to arrive a few days early to acclimate and get plenty of rest. We recommend arriving to Bali by August 23rd or 24th to ensure you are acclimated by the start of the event on August 28th.
6. What is the local currency and should I bring cash?
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Bali now widely accepts Apple Pay, WalletPay, and credit cards at most locations—something that would have been hard to imagine for those who've visited in the past! However, it's still a good idea to carry some cash for local markets and smaller purchases (like Bintangs on the beach!).
7. How do I get around in Bali?
Taxis and ride sharing apps like Grab (similar to Uber and Lyft) are popular. We recommend using pre-arranged transportation from the airport to your accommodation. For exploring, you can rent a scooter or hire a Grab scooter or car via the Grab App.
8. Is Bali safe for tourists?
Bali is generally very safe for tourists, but it's still important to stay aware of your surroundings—especially when renting motorbikes. Always wear a helmet and follow local traffic rules. As with any destination, be respectful of local customs and culture. For added peace of mind, consider purchasing travel insurance before your trip.
9. Will my phone work in Bali?
Yes, most U.S. carriers offer international roaming plans, but they can be expensive. To save on data, consider getting a local SIM card at the airport or using Wi-Fi available in most hotels and cafes.
10. What are the health precautions I should take?
It’s recommended to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and avoid drinking tap water. Bottled water is widely available. You may also want to bring insect repellent for mosquito protection. Bali belly does occur (though rare), however we recommend washing hands dilligently when eating and refraining from local food (atleast before the event).
11. What about vaccinations?
No specific vaccinations are required for entry into Bali, but it's a good idea to be up-to-date on routine vaccines such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Check with your doctor for personalized recommendations.
