Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel

An Iconic Landmark Situated on Amalfi's Seaside Cliffs

Anantara breathes new life into one of the Amalfi Coast’s most iconic landmarks, a 13th-century Capuchin convent built into the cliffside. Just a few minutes from the Piazza del Duomo, and overlooking the harbor, the location is unrivaled and the setting is spectacular.

From peaceful cave to Capuchin convent, nautical institute and luxurious hotel, this beautiful location has enjoyed a fascinating life. A setting for prayer and discovery, home to lemon groves and breathtaking Mediterranean views, this place has inspired artists and travelers from all over the world for hundreds of years.

A Brief History

In the 11th Century, the simple church of Saint Pietro a Toczolo was built into the cave for the quiet contemplation of Christian Ascetics. In 1212, Amalfitan Cardinal Pietro Capuano built his monastery next to the church. The site was given to Cistercian monks from Fossanova in 1214 with the promise of forthcoming funds from the Pope to build on the foundations. After nearly 10 years, it became an Abbey under Emperor Federico II of Palermo. Cappuccini friars took over the convent in 1583. With the help of architect Architect Matteo Vitale, they rebuilt and reorganised to create a wider and reinforced Capuchin convent with individual cells, a refectory and a kitchen. The monks' days were filled with reading books and copying them by hand, in order to study and hand them down. Through craftsmanship, cultivating the land and breeding animals, the monks attained economic independence and stayed until 1813.

THE AMALFI COAST

Southern Italy's famous coastline runs from Punta Campanella to Salerno and includes the picturesque hilltop towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Brave the narrow, winding coastal road and discover the hidden treasures of the terraced towns and villages along the way.

The Amalfi Coast remains an intriguing mix of sophistication and simplicity. Mere steps away from super yachts, chauffeur-driven Mercedes-Benz and five-star hotels, another more rural reality exists. Around precariously stacked hill villages, farmers still cultivate small plots of steeply terraced land, and their wives make cheese; down on the coast, tiny fishing communities make a living from the sea. The link between these worlds is Strada Statale 163 - the 'road of 1,000 bends' - commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Naples and completed in 1852. It hugs cliffs and deep gorges for 40km, slicing through lemon groves and whitewashed villages, rising and dipping above the shimmering sea. It is only ever wide enough for two lanes of traffic with little room for manouver, so traffic hums at a slow and easy pace with the exception of the motorini that wiz by.

The Culture

Southern Italian culture has their own variety of dialects that differ from each other such as Neapolitan or Sicilian. The life in the South tends to go much slower than the North, with a calmer and casual atmosphere, they even celebrate siestas in the South – this is when most local businesses and stores close their shutters for an afternoon break. Southern Italy is particularly proud of its role in the arts, for instance, the popularity of Neapolitan songs worldwide and the history of opera. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that ‘pizza’ was invented in the Southern Italian regions.

Sunshine and land are abundant in Southern Italy. Less industrialized than the North, South Italians live a much more agrarian lifestyle that revolves around being outside and interacting with nature. The crops of Southern Italy staple around tomatoes, wheat, eggplant, citrons, olives and rice. The crops reflect in the food as well. Traditional Southern Italian dishes consist of more pasta, rice, tomatoes and olive based dishes.

You'll find friendly and relaxed atmosphere's wherever you go, but note that the service industry is also slow natured and casual unlike the US where it is customary to check in often. The working culture is also very task oriented and they are constantly assisting multiple tourists, answers may be short and sweet but it's not meant to dismissive.

What to Eat

Food in Amalfi

This sunny region of Italy lends itself well to freshly-grown ingredients as well as some of the freshest seafood in the country. In addition to pasta dishes such as those hailing from its Naples-inspired influences, the Amalfi Coast has its own unique flavors to add to the mix.

Our recommendations:

Mozzarella Di Bufala
Pizza Napolitana - a southern Italian pizza staple
Spaghetti Alle Vongole - a seafood pasta
Santa Rosa Sfogliatella - cake filled with pastry cream and raspberries
Delizia al limone - dome-shaped cake drizzled with limoncello syrup and filled with a lemon-flavored custard
Limoncello - Italian lemon liqueur
Aperol Spritz - a staple for the apertivo hour

EXPLORING THE
AMALFI COAST

TAKE A BOAT TOUR OF THE AMALFI COAST

One of the best things to do on the Amalfi Coast is to take a boat tour. Nothing beats seeing the coastal cliffs, colorful towns, beaches, and sea caves from the water. And there are several different ways to do it.

SPEND SOME TIME ON THE BEACH

Soaking up the sun on a beach is another wonderful thing to do on the Amalfi Coast. The “beach experience” ranges from free beaches in some towns to exclusive clubs.

Along the Amalfi Coast, there are many exclusive beach clubs. Arienzo Beach Club and Laurito Beach Club are some of the most famous and these are also located in Positano.

VISIT THE VILLAS IN RAVELLO

Villa Rufolo was built in the 13th century and was used to host banquets for kings and nobility. It is now one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Amalfi Coast.

Villa Cimbrone is even older, dating back to the 11th century. However, most of the gardens and building as we see them today are about 100 years old, dating back to the early 20th century.

HIKE THE PATH OF THE GODS

Located high above the coastal towns of Positano and Praiano is one of the most beautiful walks in Italy, the Path of the Gods (also called Sentiero degli Dei). This is the most popular hike to do along the Amalfi Coast and it is famous for its views over Positano and the Sorrento peninsula.

FIORDO DI FURORE

Fiordo di Furore is a narrow cove that has a small beach and is a popular swimming spot in the summer. Beyond the beach is a small fishing village and several paper mills. You can visit the cove by boat.

DAY TRIP TO CAPRI

One of the best things to do on the Amalfi Coast is to take a day trip to Capri. Like the towns of Positano and Ravello, Capri is another Italian destination popular among both tourists and the rich and famous.

On the to-do list in Capri are a boat tour of the island, a visit to the Blue Grotto, a ride on the chairlift to Monte Solaro for panoramic views, and a bit of shopping in lovely Capri town.

EXPLORE ANOTHER TOWN

The Amalfi Coast isn’t just one spot. It’s a collection of different towns and villages, each of which has it’s own unique character and appeal so why not explore.

The easiest way to visit another town is to hop on public transport, use a shuttle or ferry (my favorite choice). Each town is about 15-20 minutes away from the next, so this is an easy addition to your stay.

Note that the ferries usually stop running at around 8pm.

TRAVELING TO AMALFI

Getting To Amalfi Is An Adventure!
We Promise It Will Be Worth It.

We recommend guests plan their personal travel 5-8 months before of the wedding. The wedding is on October 1st, a Wednesday, which will give you enough time to fly in before the weekend and settle in. Airfare is available now. We recommend booking your flights as early as possible to guarantee reasonable flight costs.

Depending on your travel plans, most guests will need:

1. A flight to a major European city

2. Taking a train or plane to the Naples Airport or Salerno

3. A car service, shuttle or ferry from the Naples Airport
or Salerno into Amalfi or city you are staying in.

FLIGHTS
✈︎

BOOKING YOUR FLIGHTS

We recommend package sites like Expedia, Priceline or Booking to compare hotel fares, book rental cars and flights.

LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL, LAX

LAX is the primary international airport serving Los Angeles, California and its surrounding metropolitan areas. This hub will have the largest international flight options.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

CAR SERVICE

Need car service for a more personal and dedicated trip? Check here to schedule any pick ups or drop offs!

SHUTTLE SERVICE

Our favorite shuttle service that we used was Pintour. You can easily schedule your direct transfer to and from the Naples Airport.

FERRIES

The most cost affordable form of transportation from the Naples Airport to Amalfi is by ferry. Hale a cab at the airport and head to the ferry station. The Ferry will take you directly to Amalfi.

ACCOMMODATIONS

When it comes to accommodation, Amalfi is full of hotels, villas and guest houses for all budgets. The city is one of the most accessible places on the coast. Being directly above sea level, it offers easy access to the central part of the city. There are a few stairways and a flat walk that leads to the church square, where you can find a variety of bars and restaurants for every taste.

Finding a place to stay in Amalfi needs some time and consideration when it comes to the type of trip you're planning. We recommend staying in Amalfi or Atrani surrounding our event as it will be within walking distance after a late evening.

Each city on the Amalfi Coast is easily connected by ferries that run during the day but stop at around 7:00pm, so when choosing a city it is important to note that if you are planning to attend an event in the evening, you will need to schedule a shuttle or car service if you are staying in another city.
