Love At First Swipe
Let’s start at the beginning… it was a chilly crisp fall in Portland, November of 2018 and what most refer to as Cuffing season. Ale was 8 months into living in downtown Portland after moving here due to getting his only job offer post graduation. Working nights made it hard to make friends, so Ale jumped on Bumble looking for a friend… or perhaps something more! (Most likely “something more” haha). Nohemi had already been living the majority of her life in Portland and being single, was most definitely ready to mingle, so she created a Bumble profile hoping to get herself out there!
For those who don’t know Bumble, it is an online dating app where the girl has to be the first to message the match, aka make the first move, and with only 24 hours to send that first message before the match disappears. Lo and behold, both swiped right and matched instantly! Nohemi had already messaged a few guys (scandalous right!?) but no one was really interesting enough to pursue further and feeling rather discouraged, logged off for the day. Ale on the other hand, was waiting somewhat eagerly for the first message to come through (he claims “impatiently” is more accurate but that’s the same thing right??). Alas no message came - cue the ooooh’s and awww’s for the poor fellow. Don’t worry for that was short lived because Nohemi remembered her match and came back online the following day, with only an hour left to send the first message! That first message was sent apologizing for taking so long and here we could say the rest is history but it was just the beginning.
10 days later, the day after Nohemi celebrated her 23rd birthday, the two decided to meet and have their first date. The original plan being dinner at Yard House in downtown but the place was packed and a bit too noisy, so they ditched the restaurant, walked around and ended up at Punchbowl Social, a more playful and chill vibe. (Fun fact, the two have never stepped foot in a Yard House restaurant again). The two shared dinner and fell into a comfortable conversation, getting to know each other deeper. Nohemi beat Ale and paid for the dinner (let’s just say Ale was shook about this haha). The two did not want the night to end there and ventured off into the cold November night, making a quick stop for coffee to warm up. The two walked around aimlessly with no destination in mind and lost intently in conversation about everything and nothing. Eventually it had become way too late to be out on the streets and Nohemi offered Ale a ride home (because he walked 15 city blocks from his apartment and both were frozen from the cold night). Conversation in the car continued until it was becoming difficult to keep the yawns at bay (this was very PG by the way!) and both finally parted ways.
From then on, the two met for a few more dates and had their first kiss after a movie date one night. The next date, Ale decided to lock in and make it official by asking Nohemi if she will be his girlfriend (Must’ve been a good first kiss, amirite?!) She said yes of course! (no drama here folks lol). Fast forward a few months, Ale blurted out those three little words and Nohemi followed suit not much long after. Only a year after the first date, both decided to move in together the fall before COVID hit. What follows is what many relationships go through, meeting each other’s family, continuously learning how to love and live with each other and navigating the ups and downs of life together as a team. The work put in by consistently choosing each other and showing commitment to each other has strengthened this love.
Alright alright, enough of this story has been said. Now the rest, truly is history…or is it really just the beginning?

Amor a primera vista
Empecemos por el principio... fue un otoño frío y fresco en Portland, noviembre del 2018 y lo que la mayoría se refiere como la temporada de buscar una pareja. Ale estuvo 8 meses viviendo en el centro de Portland después de mudarse aquí debido a su única oferta de trabajo después de su graduación. Las noches de trabajo hicieron difícil hacer amigos, así que Ale saltó a Bumble buscando una amiga... ¡o tal vez algo más! (Lo más probable es que "algo más", jaja). Nohemi ya había estado viviendo la mayor parte de su vida en Portland y, al estar soltera, definitivamente estaba lista para encontrar una pareja, ¡así que creó un perfil de Bumble con la esperanza de salir!
Para aquellos que no conocen Bumble, es una aplicación de citas en línea donde la chica tiene que ser la primera en enviar un mensaje a la pareja, también conocida como dar el primer paso, y con solo 24 horas para enviar ese primer mensaje antes de que la coincidencia desaparezca. ¡He aquí que ambos deslizaron el dedo hacia la derecha y coincidían al instante! Nohemi ya había enviado mensajes a algunos chicos (escandaloso, ¿verdad?) Pero nadie era realmente lo suficientemente interesante como para seguir adelante y se sentía bastante desanimada, desconectada por el día. Ale, por otro lado, estaba esperando con cierta ansiedad que llegara el primer mensaje (afirma que "impacientemente" es más preciso, pero eso es lo mismo, ¿verdad?). Por desgracia, no llegó ningún mensaje - señale los ooooh's y awww's para el pobre tipo. No te preocupes porque eso duró poco porque Nohemi recordó su partido y volvió a conectarse al día siguiente, ¡solo quedaba una hora para enviar el primer mensaje! Ese primer mensaje se envió disculpándose por tardar tanto y aquí podríamos decir que el resto es historia, pero en realidad fue solo el principio.
10 días después, el día después de que Nohemi celebrara su 23 cumpleaños, los dos decidieron conocerse y tener su primera cita. El plan original era cenar en Yard House en el centro, pero el lugar estaba lleno y un poco demasiado ruidoso, así que abandonaron el restaurante, caminaron y terminaron en Punchbowl Social, un ambiente más divertido y relajado. (Caso curioso, los dos nunca han vuelto a poner un pie en un restaurante Yard House). Los dos compartieron la cena y entablaron una conversación cómoda, conociéndose más profundamente. Nohemi venció a Ale y pagó la cena (digamos que Ale estaba conmocionado por esto, jaja). Los dos no querían que la noche terminara allí y se aventuraron en la fría noche de noviembre, haciendo una parada rápida para calentarse con un cafésito. Los dos caminaron sin rumbo sin destino en mente y se perdieron intensamente en la conversación, hablando sobre todo y nada. Finalmente se había vuelto demasiado tarde para estar en las calles y Nohemi le ofreció manejar a Ale a su casa (porque el caminó 15 cuadras de la ciudad de su apartamento y ambos estaban congelados por la fría noche). La conversación en el coche continuó hasta que se estaba volviendo difícil mantener a raya los bostezos. Y ambos finalmente se separaron.
A partir de entonces, los dos se conocieron en unas citas más y tuvieron su primer beso después de una cita en el cine. En la siguiente cita, Ale decidió hacerlo oficial preguntándole a Nohemi si podría será su novia (¡¿Debe haber sido un buen primer beso, verdad?!) ¡Ella dijo que sí, por supuesto! (No hay ningún drama aquí chicos, jaja). Avance rápido unos meses, Ale soltó esas tres pequeñas palabras y Nohemi siguió un poco después. Solo un año después de la primera cita, ambos decidieron mudarse juntos el otoño antes de que llegara el COVID. Lo que sigue es por lo que pasan muchas relaciones, conocer a la familia del otro, aprender continuamente a amarse y vivir con uno al otro y navegar por los bueno y lo malo de la vida juntos como un equipo. El trabajo puesto al elegirse constantemente y mostrar compromiso el uno con el otro ha fortalecido este amor.
Bueno chicos, está bien, ya se ha dicho suficiente de esta historia. Ahora el resto, ¿realmente es historia... o es realmente solo el comienzo?
